Centre mulls mandatory forensic probe in serious crimes: Amit Shah
text_fieldsPanaji (Goa): The Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday pointed out that any crime that involves a possible punishment of six years or more needs to necessarily include a forensic investigation. The minister also indicated that the Union government is considering making it mandatory for such investigation to be conducted.
Shah was addressing a gathering at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) at Dharbandora village in South Goa.
He also said that there is a paucity of trained manpower in the field of forensic science, which affects the conviction rates and leads to piling up of cases.
"Our aim is to make forensic team visits mandatory for crimes punishable by more than 6 years. There should be a small forensic science lab and mobile forensic vans available in all districts of the country. For this, Prime Minister Modi ji has established NFSU only to prepare a team of skilled experts in the country," Mr Shah said.
"We need to create fear in the mind of hardened criminals that they will be behind bars. To do this, you need trained manpower in forensic science, which is in shortage," he said.
The aim is to ensure that the visit of the forensic team would be mandatory in those crimes that attract more than six years of imprisonment, he added.
"To do this, we should have teams in all 600 districts of the country. In all the districts, there should be smaller forensic science laboratories and at each DySP-level (Deputy Superintendent of Police), there should be a mobile forensic van," the minister said.
"Goa has given the maximum number of sailors to the country and I am sure that in the coming time people will be able to say that Goa has also given the maximum number of forensic science experts to the country. The NFSU campus will help in strengthening law and order not only in Goa but also in entire western India including Karnataka," he added.
The NFSU campus will be established on over 50 acres of land at Dharbandora in South Goa.
