FIR filed after cattle trader Rahman beaten to death by mob

Agartala: A Muslim cattle trader in Tripura was allegedly lynched by a mob on Wednesday, September 2, after being accused of stealing cattle, while his family maintained that he had legally purchased the animals from a local farmer.
The incident occurred in Babger village under the jurisdiction of Kalyanpur police station. A local resident who claimed to have witnessed the assault said the trader, Jalilur Rahman, was surrounded by a group of people and severely beaten, Siasat Daily reported.
Rahman, a resident of the nearby Ghilatali Market, was reportedly on his way to the cattle market at Bagan Bazar after collecting the animals before dawn. His family denied the theft allegation, saying he had purchased two cattle from local farmer Anukul Debnath on Tuesday and had arranged to collect them the following morning because of the weekly market schedule.
According to the eyewitness, Rahman was taking the cattle from Debnath’s house at around 4 to 4.30 am when some residents spotted him and accused him of being a cattle thief. He was then allegedly surrounded and attacked.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, including fractured limbs, Rahman managed to contact his family by phone. The witness said Rahman’s wife and father-in-law rushed to the location after receiving the call but were also allegedly assaulted by the mob.
Rahman is survived by his wife and two children.
Personnel from Kalyanpur police station took the injured trader to Kalyanpur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
His family also raised questions about his motorcycle, which he had reportedly taken while going to collect the cattle. Police later found the motorcycle at Debnath’s residence, prompting questions about how it came to be there after the alleged assault.
An FIR has been registered at the Kalyanpur police station. Rahman’s family has called for a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and demanded strict action against those responsible for the alleged assault.
