Eying Bengal polls? Priyanka slams Modi govt on Vande Mataram debate
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched sharp criticism against the Narendra Modi government for a pointless debate on Vande Mataram, the nation’s national song, on Monday. She pointed out that the government pushed for a debate on Vande Mataram as the West Bengal assembly polls were approaching and that it wanted to divert attention from the problems people were facing, PTI reported.
During her address in the Lok Sabha, Priyanka said that there are two reasons for the debate on the national song in Parliament, The Times of India reported.
“There are two reasons for the debate on Vande Mataram in the House today. Elections are approaching in Bengal. In such a situation, our esteemed Prime Minister wishes to establish his role,” TOI quoted the leader.
Priyanka continued that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government seeks an opportunity to level new accusations against those who fought the freedom struggle, who made sacrifices for the country.
“By doing so, the Modi government wishes to divert the country’s attention from the essential issues concerning the people,” TOI quoted Priyanka.
The Congress MP from Wayanad slammed the BJP for targeting the first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and alleged that the government wanted this debate to make fresh allegations against those who fought for the country's freedom.
She asserted that Vande Mataram reminds Indians of the history of the nation’s freedom struggle and wondered what debate there can be on the national song.
Participating in the Centre-sponsored discussion on 150 years of the national song, Priyanka hit out at PM Narendra Modi, saying that his policies were weakening the country.
