Expert rules out possibility of third COVID wave due to Delta Plus Variants
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Dr Anurag Agarwal, a leading genome expert and the Director of the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), ruled out any possibility of a third COVID wave in the country due to the prevalence of the Delta Plus variant.
He told NDTV that in a study conducted by the IGIB in over 3,500 people in Maharashtra, the number of people infected by the Delta Plus variants was found to be less than 1 per cent, which shows that the mutant variant had little influence in the spread.
Even in areas where the cases are high, the presence of Delta Plus variants was found to be lower compared to other COVID variants, he added. But he made it clear that any variant related to Delta is a variant of concern.
Over 40 variants of Delta have been detected so far in the country and have been tagged as a variant of concern.
Meanwhile, he warned against a go-easy approach to the second wave, which according to him, is not over. Dr Agarwal underlined the need for continuing the vigil against the second COVID wave.
