Chennai: A DMK platform speaker, Sivaji Krishnamurthy, has been sacked from the party and subsequently arrested following his "crass comments" about actor and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar. Sundar, who is also a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), criticized the ruling DMK for harbouring individuals who demean women.

The controversy began when Khushbu Sundar shared a video of Sivaji Krishnamurthy making derogatory remarks about her. Outraged by his comments, Sundar took to Twitter to express her disappointment with the ruling party and urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to address the issue. She emphasized that such behaviour not only insults her but also reflects poorly on the late M. Karunanidhi, a respected leader within the DMK.

In addition to the comments made about Sundar, another clip surfaced in which Krishnamurthy allegedly made inappropriate remarks about Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi. The BJP's Tamil Nadu chief, K. Annamalai, shared the clip and demanded action against Krishnamurthy, calling him a "repeat offender."

In response to the mounting pressure, the DMK swiftly took action by dismissing Sivaji Krishnamurthy from the party, citing indiscipline and bringing disrepute to the organization. Subsequently, the police arrested Krishnamurthy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including "intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace."

Khushbu Sundar, during a press conference, expressed her concerns not only about the treatment of women in politics but also about the general outlook towards women in society. She vowed to stand up for all women and assured them that the NCW would support them.

The incident has shed light on the larger issue of gender equality in politics, prompting questions about the values and principles upheld by political parties. Sundar criticized the DMK, stating that the incident exemplified their failure to create an inclusive and development-oriented model of governance, as advocated by Chief Minister Stalin.

The BJP's condemnation of Krishnamurthy's remarks regarding both Sundar and Governor Ravi prompted his dismissal from the party as well. DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan officially announced Krishnamurthy's expulsion, stating that his actions violated party discipline and brought disrepute to the organization.

As this story unfolds, it highlights the significance of maintaining respectful discourse in political arena and serves as a reminder that derogatory comments and behaviour will not be tolerated. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the treatment of women in politics and the urgent need for change.
