Counterfeit alcohol claims ten individuals' lives in TN, several hospitalised
text_fieldsChennai: Counterfeit alcohol consumption has claimed the lives of ten individuals in Tamil Nadu among them six were from Villupuram and four from Chengallpattu.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the affected families in Villupuram and expressed his condolences. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Villupuram, the victims had consumed locally brewed country liquor that contained methanol, chemicals, and water.
The alleged liquor brewer, identified as Amaran (25), operated near Marakkanam beach in Ekkiyarkuppam and sold the toxic liquor as arrack. After consuming the liquor, at least six people fainted and were subsequently rushed to nearby hospitals.
Superintendent of Police Shreenatha of Villupuram conducted inquiries in the village to gather more information about the incident.
In response to the tragedy, Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police (DGP) Sylendra Babu took action by suspending four officers: Arun Vadivel Azhagan (Marakkanam), Maria Sobi Manjula (Kottakuppam Prohibition Enforcement Wing), Deepan (Marakkanam), and Sivagurunathan (PEW).
Additionally, 88 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
Similar fatalities were reported in Chengalpattu district as well. The Hindu reported that two people died on Friday in Maduranthakam, Chengalpattu, after consuming adulterated alcohol. More deaths were reported on Sunday in the same district.
Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each affected family and Rs 50,000 for the 12 hospitalized individuals.
K Ponmudy, the state Minister for Higher Education and MLA from Thirukoilur in Villupuram district met with the families and victims, expressing his grief over the incident. Ponmudy highlighted the chief minister's efforts to prevent such incidents from occurring and acknowledged the tragic nature of the event.
