Cash shower at Gujarat dayro event featuring Kaviraj Jignesh sparks online debate
text_fieldsA devotional dayro event in Gujarat’s Junagadh district has gone viral after videos showed devotees showering large amounts of currency notes on stage during a performance by bhajan singer Kaviraj Jignesh.
The event was held in Malia Hatina as part of a religious programme linked to a Bhagavad Gyan Yagya.
Viral clips showed devotees clapping, dancing, and singing along as people began offering currency notes near the stage during the performance.
As the programme continued, the scale of the offerings increased significantly. Several attendees were seen carrying bags and sacks filled with cash and throwing notes into the air while volunteers tried to manage the growing piles accumulating on stage. The devotional singing continued throughout the event.
Dayro performances are a traditional part of Gujarat’s folk culture and combine storytelling, music, humour, and spiritual expression. Audience participation and offerings during performances are common at such events.
The programme also featured Jayaraj Ahir, son of folk artist Mayabhai Ahir, who joined others in offering money on stage. Videos of the event quickly spread online, triggering debate on social media.
Organisers later clarified that the money collected was not intended for personal use. They said the contributions would be used for religious activities, charitable work, and future community welfare programmes.
While many social media users described the event as a display of faith and cultural tradition, others questioned the scale of the public cash offerings. The videos have drawn widespread attention to Gujarat’s devotional dayro culture and its blend of music, spirituality, and community participation.
