Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is reportedly gearing up to expand its network infrastructure with the installation of an additional one lakh 4G towers across India.

This follows the successful deployment of one lakh 4G towers earlier this month.

The public sector telecom provider is also inviting the public to suggest names for its upcoming 5G services.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, confirmed that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will soon approach the Cabinet for approval to move ahead with this next phase of expansion.

“After successfully installing 100,000 towers with optimal 4G equipment, we will approach the Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve another 100,000 towers,” Dr. Pemmasani told the publication.

The minister also revealed that BSNL aims to improve its cash flow by monetising its assets and investing in more 4G and 5G infrastructure. He acknowledged earlier performance issues with the telecom operator’s 4G equipment but assured that the indigenous technology is being optimised and enhanced.

“We expect it to operate near perfection by the end of July or August next year,” he added.

Alongside infrastructure upgrades, BSNL is also preparing for the launch of its 5G services. In an effort to involve citizens, the telecom company has called on the public to submit name suggestions for the 5G service.

“Make history. Name the future of BSNL 5G,” the telecom operator posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Users have been encouraged to comment suggestions, with entries being accepted until 5 p.m. on June 13. Some of the popular submissions so far include names like “BSNL Blitz”, “Tez Bharat”, and “BSNL 5G Storm”.
