Aligarh: The workers of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), an affiliate of the BJP, staged a protest outside the Kwarsi police station demanding stringent action against 27-year-old Gagan Kumar. They accused Kumar of making an objectionable social media post about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The protest, which was captured in viral videos, saw BJYM activists placing an image of Bharat Mata, the national personification of India, on the chair of the Station House Officer.

The case against Gagan Kumar, 27 was registered based on a complaint filed by the BJYM district president, Dharamveer Singh Lodhi. Lodhi alleged that Kumar's social media post, which included a photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was disrespectful and could incite public anger while also tarnishing India's reputation globally.

The case was filed under sections 268 (public nuisance) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The Circle Officer (Third) of Aligarh, Ashok Kumar Singh, confirmed the demonstration, stating that the BJYM workers were demanding an increase in the charges against the accused and his subsequent judicial custody. However, the police assured them that if the ongoing investigation uncovers the necessity to add additional charges, it will be done accordingly.

During the protest, the BJYM activists temporarily placed the Bharat Mata poster on the chair, symbolizing their sentiment towards the alleged offence. Following discussions between the protesters and the police, the activists dispersed, allowing regular work to resume at the police station.

Kumar, who claimed to be a social worker and an ordinary citizen, was arrested on Saturday but subsequently released on bail the same day. The police have refrained from providing further details regarding the objectionable post, stating that the matter is under investigation. They assured the media that more information would be shared when appropriate.
