New Delhi: Calling himself a student of history, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday urged historians to rewrite history, adding that "our history has not been presented properly and is distorted", according to NDTV.

Addressing a function organised by Assam government in Delhi commemorating the 400th birth anniversary of 17th Century Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, Amit Shah assured historians that the government would support their efforts.

"Come forward, do research and rewrite history. This is how we can inspire future generation too," Shah was quoted by NDTV as saying.

Shah who called himself a student of history said he heard it frequently being said that India's history had not been presented properly and was distorted, and added that " we need to correct this'.

"I ask you -- who is stopping us from presenting history properly and in a glorious manner," Shah was quoted as saying.

The Home Minister asked students and university professors attending the function to try to research on 30 dynasties that ruled over 150 years in India and also 300 eminent personalities who fought for freedom.

Assuring help in their research, Shah told historians and students present in Vigyan Bhavan that once enough was written, false narratives could be dispelled.

Urging the experts to revisit the course of history for the benefit of people, Shah extolled the role of Lachit in halting the Mughal expansion by defeating them in the battle of Sariaghat despite his ill health.

Urging Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to have the books on Lachit Barphukan translated in at least 10 languages, Shah said people should know about the valour of Lachit.
