‘Vegetarians only’ ad: ₹6.5 crore Mumbai flat sparks row

Mumbai: A ₹6.50-crore flat in South Mumbai’s Tardeo has triggered controversy after a real estate agent advertised it exclusively to vegetarians, sparking widespread criticism on social media. Real estate agent Bhavesh Kavare later removed the promotional video following the backlash.
The video showcased a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment offering expansive views of the sea and South Mumbai. Kavare promoted the property at a price of ₹6.50 crore and specifically asked only “pure vegetarian” clients to contact him, making dietary preference a condition for prospective buyers.

More than three lakh people viewed the video, quickly sparking a wider debate over whether people should be restricted from buying or living in a property based on their dietary habits. Several social media users criticised the exclusion as discriminatory and questioned the practice of using dietary preferences to determine who can access housing.
Shiv Sena’s Shinde faction leader Gurjyot Singh Keer also joined the criticism, questioning the exclusion of people from residential spaces based on their eating habits. Following the growing controversy and public criticism, Kavare deleted the video.
However, it remains unclear who imposed the alleged vegetarian-only condition. It has not been established whether the restriction came from the housing society, the flat owner, or was included independently by the broker in his advertisement.
The incident has once again triggered debate over discriminatory housing practices in Mumbai, particularly restrictions linked to food preferences and the social identities associated with them.
