New Delhi: Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) MP N K Premachandran on Thursday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured that all necessary steps would be taken to secure the release of two nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh over allegations of forced religious conversion and human trafficking.

Speaking to the media in New Delhi, Premachandran said the assurance came during a meeting between Shah and a delegation of Kerala MPs who raised concerns over the arrest. According to him, the Union Minister conveyed that both the central government and the Chhattisgarh government would take appropriate legal measures to ensure justice is served in the case.

Premachandran added that Shah’s remarks during the meeting reflected a belief that the nuns were not guilty of the charges levelled against them.

The two nuns, Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis along with a local woman, Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested on July 25 at Durg railway station following a complaint reportedly filed by a Bajrang Dal activist. The complaint accused them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and attempting to traffic them.
