After right-wing trolls, Sudha Murthy clarifies links between Raksha Bandhan and Humayun

Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murthy’s comment on the origin of Raksha Bandhan, however, is said to have not fallen on the right ears, as she had to clarify after trolls, allegedly from Hindu right-wing social accounts, criticised her for 'distorting history' by linking the festival with Rani Karnavati and Mughal emperor Humayun.

The dispute arose when Murthy suggested that the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, a festival primarily celebrated in north India, began when Rani Karnavati sent a thread to Mughal emperor Humayun seeking his assistance.

Murthy had shared a video on social media platform X, describing Raksha Bandhan's historical significance and its association with the incident involving Rani Karnavati and Humayun.

The MP’s claim provoked criticism from right-wing Hindu groups who accused her of distorting historical facts. They argued that Raksha Bandhan predates the story of Karnavati and Humayun, and demanded evidence to support her statement.

Critics took to social media, challenging Murthy to provide historical proof for her assertion. They expressed concern that her comments might undermine traditional practices of Sanathana Dharma, calling for her to clarify the basis of her claim.

In response to the backlash, Murthy issued a statement clarifying her position. She explained that the story she referenced was intended to illustrate one of the many narratives associated with Raksha Bandhan, rather than asserting it as the definitive origin of the festival. Murthy emphasised that Raksha Bandhan is a time-honoured tradition with a rich history transcending specific events and stories.

She stressed that her intention was to share a personal story she had learned growing up, celebrating the festival’s symbolism and significance in her own life. Murthy reiterated her respect for the festival and her appreciation for its cultural heritage, affirming that it remains a cherished tradition in her family and across the country.
