Sivaganga: At a blue metal quarry in Singampunari, rocks fell Tuesday as a result of a blast, crushing four workers to death and trapping one under rubble. Muruganandham from Odaipatti, Arumugam from Keelavalavu, Andisamy, and Ganeshan from Madurai were identified as the deceased.

Arshith from Odisha is still trapped and Fire and Rescue Service personnel are attempting to rescue him. Michael from Thoothukudi, the sixth worker who was pulled from the wreckage, is in serious condition at a Madurai private hospital, TNIE reported.

Six employees were working 30 feet below the surface of Mehavarnam's quarry in Singampunari when the incident happened. Rocks collapsed due to a blast, instantaneously killing Muruganandham and Arumugam. Later, Andisamy and Ganeshan were dragged from the debris. For a post-mortem, the bodies were moved to the Government Rajaji Hospital and the Government Sivaganga Medical College Hospital.

Rescue operations were stepped up after Collector Asha Ajith and SP Ashish Rawat inspected the scene. An investigation has been launched by the SS Kottai police.
