Veteran singer Vani Jairam passes away
text_fieldsChennai: National award-winning veteran playback singer Vani Jairam passed away at her house on Haddows Road, Nungambakkam in Chennai on Saturday. She was 78.
According to reports, she had sustained an injury on her forehead at the time of her death.
Jairam was recently conferred with Padma Bhushan- the third highest civilian award in India, ahead of Republic Day 2023.
A three-time national award winner, the acclaimed singer collaborated with some of the biggest composers across various industries including MS Ilaiyaraaja, R D Burman, K V Mahadevan, O P Nayyar, and Madan Mohan, and delivered several chartbusters.
She has songs in various languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tulu and Oriya, recording a total of 10,000 songs in her career.
With a career starting in 1971 and spanning over five decades, Jairam has received State awards from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat and Odisha.
