Academy Museum to showcase 12 iconic Indian films in ‘Emotion in Colour’ series
text_fieldsFor the first time in history, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will celebrate Indian cinema with a special film series titled "Emotion in Colour: A Kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema."
Running from March 7 to April 19, 2025, the program will feature a curated selection of 12 landmark Indian films that highlight the evolution of color in cinematic storytelling.
Curated by renowned filmmaker and film preservationist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, this unique showcase aims to explore how color has shaped narratives, emotions, and visual aesthetics in Indian cinema over the decades.
The lineup includes classics spanning multiple languages and eras, reflecting the diversity and richness of Indian filmmaking.
Among the featured films are Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957), Shyam Benegal’s Manthan (1976), Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), and Aribam Syam Sharma’s Manipuri-language film Ishanou (1990). Other highlights include Aravindan Govindan’s Malayalam classic Kummatty (1979), Ketan Mehta’s Mirch Masala (1987), and Kumar Shahani’s Maya Darpan (1972).
Additionally, the program will showcase visually stunning Bollywood films such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas (2002), Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodhaa Akbar (2008). The selection also features Satyajit Ray’s Bengali masterpiece Kanchenjungha (1962) and Mani Ratnam’s Tamil political drama Iruvar (1997).
This historic event not only honors the artistic legacy of Indian cinema but also provides global audiences with a rare opportunity to experience the magic of these films on the big screen.
