ONGC and Tata Power Renewable join forces to advance battery energy storage in India
text_fieldsOil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has partnered with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) to explore new opportunities in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sector.
The companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday during India Energy Week 2025.
As a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, TPREL will collaborate with ONGC to develop large-scale energy storage solutions, focusing on grid stabilisation, renewable energy integration, hybrid energy systems, industrial and commercial storage, microgrids, backup power solutions, and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
Speaking on the partnership, ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh reaffirmed the company’s commitment to clean energy initiatives. He emphasised that strengthening energy storage capabilities is essential for ensuring grid stability and supporting India’s transition to renewable energy.
Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL, highlighted the critical role of BESS in enhancing grid reliability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy. He stated that the collaboration aims to develop cutting-edge storage solutions that contribute to a sustainable and resilient energy future.
The initiative aligns with India's goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. Meanwhile, TPREL recently commissioned the country’s largest Solar and BESS project - a 100 MW solar PV plant with a 120 MWh utility-scale battery storage system in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh.
Through this partnership, ONGC and TPREL aim to drive innovation in energy storage, reinforcing India's clean energy ambitions.
