Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to support regional stability, including safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, during a 30-minute call on Thursday, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said.

Takaichi outlined Japan’s position on the Middle East conflict and stressed the need for a lasting agreement between Iran and the United States. She said maintaining the current ceasefire and reducing tensions were necessary and called for the early restoration of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

She expressed Japan’s backing for ongoing US-Iran talks and diplomatic efforts by mediating countries, adding that Tokyo would continue to work with Saudi Arabia and the international community toward a negotiated outcome.

Takaichi also conveyed condolences over losses in Saudi Arabia linked to Iranian attacks and thanked Riyadh for assisting the evacuation of Japanese nationals from nearby countries.

She acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s role as a key crude oil supplier to Japan and called for continued cooperation to strengthen energy security.

Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation through the Strategic Partnership Council, with a focus on sectors including e-sports, gaming, space, artificial intelligence and investment, as well as preparations for Riyadh Expo 2030.
