New Delhi: The total sugar production this year is estimated to be around 249 lakh tonnes against estimated consumption requirement of about 250 lakh tonnes, an official statement said on Tuesday.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry statement said that the the total availability of sugar was sufficient to meet the estimated domestic requirement with the carry over stock.

"There will be smooth availability of sugar and the sugar prices in the domestic market are expected to remain stable at reasonable levels," it said.

It said the current 2017-18 sugar season that started from October, sugar cane crushing operations in all major sugar producing states had commenced smoothly.

"Given the current comfortable position of production and in order to further smoothen the supply chain for easy availability of sugar in all regions, (the) government has withdrawn stock holding and turnover limits on dealers of sugar with immediate effect," it said.
