Violence in Sudan and South Sudan displaces hundreds of thousands, UN reports
text_fieldsUnited Nations: Ongoing hostilities in Sudan and South Sudan have forced hundreds of thousands from their homes, exacerbating a dire humanitarian crisis, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Insecurity across multiple regions continues to drive displacement while straining access to food, healthcare, water, sanitation, shelter, and education.
In Sudan's South Kordofan state, an OCHA assessment in Abu Jubaihah last week revealed over 10,000 displaced people in camps grappling with critical shortages. Many fled violence and hunger in Kadugli and Dilling, while others arrived from West Kordofan, East Darfur, and even South Sudan after perilous journeys. In North Darfur's Tawila area, more than 1,000 new arrivals face acute deficits in food, health services, and essentials; partners are providing hot meals via community kitchens but require additional support. Displacement persists in East Darfur and Blue Nile states as well.
In South Sudan, renewed fighting and airstrikes in Jonglei state since late December have displaced an estimated 280,000 people, with clashes severely limiting aid delivery. Cholera outbreaks have emerged in Duk County due to overcrowding and poor water access at displacement sites; UN teams are bolstering treatment facilities and gearing up for vaccination drives. Humanitarian efforts face mounting threats, including looting of vehicles, boats, and equipment, alongside intimidation of aid workers.
