text_fieldsMoscow: Russia reported a Ukrainian strike that claimed the lives of at least 14 individuals and left 108 injured in Belgorod, situated approximately 30 kilometres from the Ukraine border.
This strike follows a series of Russian attacks that caused extensive casualties in Ukraine.
Belgorod, a city frequently targeted by what Russia claims to be indiscriminate shelling from Kyiv's forces, witnessed the aftermath of the recent strike. Unverified footage displayed extensive damage, including debris scattered across streets, burnt-out vehicles, and billowing smoke in the city centre.
"According to updated information, 12 adults and two children were killed in Belgorod. Another 108 people, including 15 children, were injured," stated Russia's emergencies ministry.
President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the incident by the Kremlin, which further warned of repercussions for the attack.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian rescuers continued their search efforts in the aftermath of Russian strikes that claimed at least 39 lives the previous day. The assaults targeted various civilian establishments, including schools, a maternity hospital, shopping centres, and residential buildings, drawing widespread international condemnation.
Ukraine's military reported that Russia launched 158 missiles and drones, with 114 destroyed by Ukraine's defence systems. This marked a significant escalation, described as the "most massive missile attack" of the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared January 1 as a day of mourning in Kyiv, where at least 16 people lost their lives.
The United Nations denounced the attacks, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities. Poland reported a Russian missile briefly entering its airspace, prompting NATO solidarity and vigilance.
As Ukraine faces sustained assaults, it appeals to Western allies for continued military support. US President Joe Biden urged Congress to approve additional aid, emphasising the urgency of supporting Ukraine's defence.
Britain pledged to dispatch hundreds more air defence missiles to Kyiv, reinforcing its commitment to stand with Ukraine. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasised the need for unwavering support for Ukraine in its time of need.
