Four armed men killed in encounter with police in Meghalaya

Four armed men were killed in an exchange of fire with police during a naka-checking operation in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district on Sunday, with authorities working to establish their identities and verify their backgrounds.
The incident took place around 4 am in the Songsak area, where police personnel were conducting naka-checking. According to sources, the four men opened fire at the personnel as they approached the checkpoint for inspection.
Police retaliated, injuring all four men. They subsequently died from their injuries.
The identities of the deceased had not been formally established. Police are also investigating their backgrounds and possible criminal histories. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the men may have had serious criminal links or associations with individuals with criminal backgrounds.
Police have confirmed that the four men could be linked to an incident reported at Tapra, across the state border, on August 25.
East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Swapnil Pawar said police were first working to establish the identities of the men, following which their backgrounds would be verified. Their possible links to previous incidents would then be examined as part of the investigation.
Police are also reviewing the circumstances leading to the encounter, including the events surrounding the opening of fire, while gathering further details about the four men and their possible links to reported crimes.
