London: Drivers under the age of 25 in UK are banned from giving a lift to young passengers in their cars for the first 6 months to a year of driving.

The new step comes amid concerns that young drivers, though making up just six percent of total licence holders, account for one in five fatal and serious crashes in UK.

The restrictions, introduced as part of a "graduated driving licence" scheme, are aimed at cutting down the number of car crashes happening in the nation, especially involving young drivers, according to Independent.

The roads minister, Richard Holden, will consider the proposal at a meeting on May 16, before implementing the scheme through the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act.

During probation period, new drivers can have their licences revoked for incurring six penalty points within two years of passing, according to the report.

The restrictions follows a campaign by a woman whose 18-year-old daughter got killed in a car crash while travelling in a friend’s car.

The driver, 18, who passed test four months previously was also killed in the accident.

The 52-year-old Sharron Huddleston told the Sunday Times that she was determined in memory of her daughter to ensure no other family goes through the same pain.

Huddleston will meet roads minister next month to talk about her campaign.

Meanwhile, road safety charity Brake said one in five drivers crash within a year of passing their test.

Other countries including Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and some US states already put in place similar restrictions on new drivers.
