Trump signals new tariff push after US court blocks global duties

US President Donald Trump has hinted at a new tariff strategy after a federal trade court ruled against his latest global import duties.

Speaking after the decision, Trump said his administration would pursue tariffs in a “more complex way” following the legal setback.

“We just have to do them in a more complex way… less efficient, but I get to charge more,” Bloomberg quoted him as saying.

The remarks came after a split 2-1 ruling by a three-judge panel of the US Court of International Trade in New York, which found that Trump had exceeded the tariff authority granted to the President by Congress.

The court declared the 10% global tariffs “invalid” and “unauthorised by law”.

The tariffs had been imposed under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 after the US Supreme Court blocked an earlier and broader set of Trump-era tariffs introduced under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act in February.

The latest ruling followed a lawsuit filed by several small businesses, including spice company Burlap & Barrel and toy maker Basic Fun!, along with the state of Washington.

Although the ruling directly applies only to the plaintiffs involved in the case, it represents a major setback for Trump’s protectionist trade agenda.

The administration is expected to appeal the decision, setting the stage for another legal battle that could eventually return to the Supreme Court.
