Top American officials have strongly denounced a Russian missile strike that devastated the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday morning, killing at least 34 people and injuring nearly 120 more, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The assault is being described as one of the most lethal attacks in recent months.

Keith Kellogg, the U.S. special envoy to Ukraine and a retired lieutenant general, condemned the targeting of civilian areas, stating the strike “crosses any line of decency.” Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, Kellogg emphasised his military background to highlight the severity of the attack: “As a former military leader, I understand targeting and this is wrong.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also expressed sorrow over the tragedy, posting on X that the United States "extends our deepest condolences to the victims of today’s horrifying Russian missile attack on Sumy." Rubio called the strike a grim reminder of the urgent need to end the war.

The Trump administration has been pushing for a negotiated ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, but efforts to secure meaningful progress have yet to show any result. Despite multiple rounds of dialogue between Russian and U.S. representatives, President Trump’s diplomatic push has not yielded any significant breakthroughs.
