The son of a retired major general of Pakistan's Army, Hassan Askari, has been sentenced to five years in prison for criticising Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and calling for his resignation. A military court convicted him under treason charges.

Hasson wrote a letter to Bajwa and was charged for criticising the Pak Army chief's extension in the letter, reported The News International.

Maj Gen (R) Zafar Mehdi Askari's son was defended by an officer deputed by the court. The trial took place in July 2021. Askari alleged that he had difficulties in meeting with his son as he was kept in a high-security prison in Sahiwal.

In January, the Islamabad High Court heard the case and asked the treason trial be held in front of a camera. The question of whether a civilian can be tried by the military court was raised during the trial.
