LONDON: Lebanese journalist Zeina Karam has been appointed as the new deputy news director for Europe for the Associated Press.

Since 1996 Karam has been covering stories from the Middle East for AP. For more than a decade, she has led the agency's coverage in countries like Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

In 2014, Karam was named AP Beirut bureau chief where she primarily oversaw the text coverage of Lebanon and Syria. Later in 2016, she was named as the news director for Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

Bassem Mroue, Middle East AP correspondent announced Zeina's appointment on Twitter: "The AP has named Karam deputy news director for Europe after leading the agency's news coverage in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq for about a decade. Karam has been covering the Middle East for the AP since 1996."

Karam has worked as a reporter in more than a dozen countries in the Middle Eastern region including Egypt, Iraq, Algeria, Sudan, Oman and the UAE. She also covered UN General Assembly sessions in New York and the first two rounds of Syrian peace talks in Geneva in 2014, according to the Arab News.

She has also reported on the Lebanese economic and political recovery, and its repeated conflicts with Israel, including the month-long Israel-Hezbollah war in 2006.

Karam holds a degree in political science and public administration from the American University of Beirut.
