Dhaka: Bangladesh's interim government under Muhammad Yunus has decided to request a United Nations investigation into the assassination of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, following a tense sit-in protest outside the Chief Advisor's residence.

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced the decision on social media after Inqilab Moncho members, led by Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber and Hadi's widow Fatima Tasnim Zuma, demanded a UN-supervised probe. Surrounded by police, protesters vowed not to leave without justice guarantees.

Police had labeled Hadi's December 12 murder a "politically motivated" assassination planned in Singapore. The 32-year-old, known for Islamist rhetoric and anti-India narratives during the 2024 protests that ousted Sheikh Hasina, was shot from a motorcycle in Dhaka and died in Singapore on December 18 despite airlift.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police filed charges against 17 suspects. Hadi, a parliamentary hopeful for February 12 elections, rose to prominence during the mass uprising.
