WhatsApp begins username reservations, phone number sharing no longer needed
text_fieldsWhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations globally, introducing a new privacy-focused feature that will allow users to chat without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature will be launched later this year, with reservations opening on June 29.
In a blog post, the Meta-owned messaging platform said users can begin reserving usernames ahead of the wider rollout. Notifications will appear within the app when the feature becomes available for individual accounts.
Instead of exchanging phone numbers, users will be able to share a unique WhatsApp username to start conversations. The company said usernames are designed as a privacy feature rather than a social media identity. There will be no public directory or username search, and people must know a user's exact username to initiate contact.
Users can reserve a username by updating WhatsApp to the latest version and navigating to Settings > Account > Username. The app will also offer a username generator to suggest available options.
WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key that adds another layer of security. When enabled, first-time contacts will need both the username and the key before they can send a message. Users can change the key at any time.
The feature is expected to be useful for community groups, neighbourhood chats, events, and other situations where users may not want to disclose their phone numbers. Businesses, creators and organisations will also be able to claim the same username they use on Instagram or Facebook to maintain a consistent identity across Meta platforms.
To promote the rollout in India, WhatsApp has partnered with actor Aamir Khan. The company said usernames will be introduced gradually over the coming months, with users receiving in-app notifications when the feature becomes available in their region.
