Mozilla stopped accepting cryptocurrency for donations in the middle of hotshot debates. Mozilla earlier stated that they started accepting bitcoins in 2014 for donations. This triggered an important debate in the tech world. A large chunk of tech activists rallied against this citing the environmental impact.

Zawinski former Mozilla employee unleashed s criticism citing the ecological reasons as well the tranceperecy of the cryptocurrencies. He further stated that "Everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision to partner with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters,"

The recent studies revealed the high consumption of electricity in the bitcoin transaction. Digiconomist carried out extensive research on this issue and the research revealed the large-scale consumption of electricity. Transaction of one bitcoin uses 2,106.37 kilowatt-hours of electricity that is approximately equal to the average electricity consumption of American households in 72.2 days.

The Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index provides the statistical details about the rate of consumption per year and as per the records Bitcoin consumes 122.87 Terawatt-hours of electricity every year more than the electricity combustion in the Netherlands, Argentina, or the UAE.

A tweet from Mozilla confirmed that they accepted donations. Further tweet added

"Decentralised web technology continues to be an important area for us to explore, but a lot has changed since we started accepting crypto donations. In the spirit of open-source, this will be a transparent process and we'll share regular updates,"

However, the tech giants faced severe criticism in the pretext of the tweet and forced them to rethink the decision. The latest updates from Mozilla asserted that they are stopping accepting donations from Bitcoin
