California: Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is all set to launch a microblogging app called Threads, which will serve as an alternative to Twitter. The app is set to be released on July 6, as indicated by a listing on Apple's App Store.

The launch of Threads comes in response to recent restrictions imposed by Twitter, including the requirement of verification to use TweetDeck and limiting the number of Tweets users can see.

Threads, originally Instagram's text-based conversation app, will allow users to follow the same accounts they currently follow on the photo-sharing platform, while also maintaining their existing usernames. The move is seen as an effort by Meta to provide users with an alternative platform for short-form text posts and replies, similar to the interface of Twitter.

Prominent figures within the tech industry have weighed in on the potential impact of Threads. Alessandro Paluzzi, a mobile developer known for leaking information about Meta's products, shared screenshots of the app in June 2023, revealing its Twitter-like interface. Matthew Panzarino, a tech journalist for TechCrunch, suggested that Threads could become a formidable competitor to Twitter, citing Meta's substantial user base and the possibility of integration with other Meta products like Instagram and Facebook.

Ben Thompson, a tech analyst who contributes to Stratechery, expressed his support for Threads on a podcast, describing it as a "smart move" for Meta. Thompson argued that the app could attract users seeking a more streamlined and focused social media experience.

Amit Agarwal, Meta's Vice President of Product Management, said in a blog post that Threads provides a "new way to connect with the people you care about most." He described the app as offering a "more personal and intimate" means of sharing photos, videos, and text messages. Kristen Chin, Meta's Director of Product Management, emphasised in an interview with TechCrunch that Threads offers a more deliberate and focused social media experience compared to other platforms. Chin characterised the app as catering to individuals who seek meaningful connections with close friends and family.

Sasank Reddy, Meta's Product Manager for Threads, highlighted in a tweet that the app serves as a platform to share day-to-day moments with loved ones. Reddy positioned Threads as a more private and secure way to connect with others, differentiating it from other social media platforms.

Meta has yet to respond to inquiries regarding a potential launch of Threads on the Google Play Store.

The introduction of Threads is expected to provide users with an alternative microblogging experience, while Twitter continues to face scrutiny over its recent restrictions and changes being made by new owner Elon Musk.
