New Delhi: In a strict and time-bound directive, the Central Board of Secondary Education has ordered all affiliated schools to implement the mandatory 3-language policy from Class 6 within seven days, triggering urgency across institutions ahead of the 2026–27 academic year.

The move is part of a sweeping overhaul of the board’s language framework, making it compulsory for students to study three languages up to Class 10. Under the revised structure, the first language will be taught at an advanced level, the second at an intermediate level, and the third at a basic level. The changes will also apply to students entering Class 9 in the 2026–27 academic year.

The board has expanded language options, allowing students to choose from regional languages such as Maithili, Santali, Dogri, and Konkani. However, in a significant gap, CBSE has not yet released official textbooks for the third language, directing schools to begin classes immediately using locally available materials instead of waiting.

Schools have also been instructed to update their chosen third language on the OASIS portal within the deadline. Once selected in Class 6, the same language must be continued through Classes 9 and 10.

CBSE confirmed that the last board examination under the current language policy will be held in 2027, while the first Class 10 board exams under the new system will take place in 2031, marking a major shift in India’s school education structure.
