Qatar World Cup will awake the world economy: Organisers

FIFA World Cup 2022, which is all set to be staged in Qatar, will boost the world economy and play a crucial role in stimulating the post-Covid world, said Hassan al-Thawadi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy of the World Cup organising body.

Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum, al-Thawadi emphasised that the country expects the World Cup to contribute around 20 billion dollars to the economy spread across various sectors, including construction and tourism.

"The strong belief we have is that everybody living in Qatar or contributing to the development of Qatar is treated with dignity. Their health and safety is of the utmost concern to us. That means that the progress will need to continue. It is not about what needs to be done till the tournament. Rather it is a continuous commitment to progress, even after the tournament," Al-Thawadi said as he stressed Qatar's commitment and progress in worker welfare.

Audiences worldwide are enthusiastically propping up to welcome the FIFA World Cup while waiting for the 2020 Summer Olympics ahead of this month. The world has started beating the drums for the beginning of the Olympics, scheduled from 23 July to 8 August this year, as Japan, the hosting country, suffers from a severe economic setback due to the pandemic.

The Head of the Supreme Committee added that the World Cup would be an extraordinary event as the first to be held in Central Asia and the Arab world. Qatar expects that the spectators can get back to the stadium to witness the event at full capacity.
