Kane Williamson retires: Cricket to miss its calm Kiwi giant
text_fieldsLondon: New Zealand cricket has been left facing the end of an era after Kane Williamson announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down the curtain on one of the most accomplished careers in the game’s modern history. The 35-year-old confirmed his decision during New Zealand’s Test tour of England, with the opening Test at Lord’s becoming the final international appearance of his 16-year career.
Williamson said he had been considering the decision for several days and concluded that this was the right moment to step away from international cricket on his own terms. His departure marks the end of a career defined by consistency, leadership and record-breaking achievements.
The former captain retires as New Zealand’s highest run-scorer across all international formats. In 378 international matches, Williamson amassed 19,346 runs and struck 48 centuries. His Test record stands at 9,515 runs from 110 matches at an average of 54.06, including 33 centuries. He also scored 7,256 runs in 175 One-Day Internationals and 2,575 runs in 93 T20 Internationals.
Williamson announced himself on the international stage with a century on his Test debut against India in Ahmedabad in 2010. Beyond international cricket, he also represented Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.
Widely regarded as one of cricket’s calmest and most respected leaders, Williamson guided New Zealand to some of the greatest achievements in its history. His crowning moment as captain came in 2021 when New Zealand defeated India to win the inaugural ICC World Test Championship. He also led the Black Caps to the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup, earning the Player of the Tournament award in the 2019 World Cup.
Head coach Rob Walter described Williamson’s retirement as a major loss for New Zealand cricket, while former captain Sir Richard Hadlee hailed him as one of the finest players of his generation. His retirement also rules him out of next year’s ODI World Cup.
