Women's T20 World Cup: Harmanpreet Kaur argues with umpire over run-out

A dramatic run-out controversy unfolded during India’s match against New Zealand in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024.

The incident occurred in the 14th over when New Zealand's Amelia Kerr hit the ball to long-off and attempted a quick single. India’s Harmanpreet Kaur, fielding at long-off, believed the play had ended and handed over the cap to Deepti Sharma, signifying the end of the over.

However, Kerr attempted a second run and was run out before reaching the crease. Although India appealed, the umpires ruled that the ball was dead and dismissed the run-out claim, prompting Kerr to return to the crease and sparking visible frustration from Kaur, who engaged in a heated discussion with the officials.

New Zealand, led by skipper Sophie Devine, chose to bat first, aiming to be aggressive despite recent challenges. Devine noted the pitch's slower nature but believed it still offered scoring opportunities. India’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, remained confident in her team, highlighting its strong lineup and balanced composition.

New Zealand: Suzie Bates, Georgia Plimmer, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine (c), Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, Isabella Gaze (w), Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Lea Tahuhu, Eden Carson.

India: Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (w), Deepti Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Pooja Vastrakar, Shreyanka Patil, Asha Sobhana, Renuka Thakur Singh.
