Islamabad: Former Pakistan cricketer Abdul Razzaq who has been in the eye of the storm over his ‘disrespectful’ remarks on actor Aishwarya Rai has apologized.

Abdul Razzaq, taking to social media platform X, said he was ashamed of his ‘very bad words’, adding ‘I apologise to everyone, please forgive me’.

Razzaq blamed slip of tongue for his remarks, saying he originally wanted to share a different analogy but ended taking Aishwarya Rai’s name.

The former cricketer was on a panel alongside cricketers Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi when he brought up Indian actor’s name, criticising the current Pakistan cricket squad.

Questioning Pakistan players’ intentions, he said in Urdu: ‘If your thinking is that you marry Aishwarya Rai and expect a pious and virtuous child to be born, then that can never happen.’

As the footage went viral on social media, inviting scathing criticism, Afridi appeared on a television news and condemned Razzaq’s comments.

Afridi said he was not aware of what was being said on the panel, nevertheless he was seen laughing at Razzaq’s words.

‘It was a wrong joke and such jokes should not be made,’ he was quoted as saying on Samaa TV.

Former cricketer Mohammad Yousaf criticized Abdul Razzaq, taking to X: ‘I hope he will be ashamed of what he said and apologise.”

Cricketer Shoaib Akhtar joined the chorus, saying ‘no woman should be disrespected like this.’
