Revoke UAPA, HR activists demand
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Human rights activists have called for repealing Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act( UAPA) unconditionally, alleging that the act is being misused to silence dissenting voices.
The rights activists also demanded that all cases registered under the act should be withdrawn.
Alongside, they demanded authorities to take action against officers in Maharashtra police in connection with arresting the five leading social activists who have been involved in bona fide social services.
Gadgets including laptop and mobile phones, seized during the raids, should be restored to persons. Rights Activists including writer Arundhati Roy and Supreme Court Lawyer Prashant Bhushan made a joint statement in a press meet. Afterwards, Human Rights Activists took out a protest march.
Outfits participated in the march included People’s Union of Civil Liberties, People’s Union for Democratic Rights, Indian Association of Progressive Lawyers, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, the women collective against state terrorism and sexual assault WSS, and Safai Karmachari Andolan.
