Meerut: Dalits in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district have threatened to embrace Islam after having been denied entry to a Hindu temple days ago.

A few Dalit women belonging to Valmiki Samaj in Panchgaon Patti village approached a 50-year-old temple on Sunday to pray.

However, the priest denied them entry on the ground that dalits would not be allowed to pray in the temple.

Their attempt at reasoning out the priest irked him and the priest started abusing and threatening the women with consequence in case they came near the temple.

Subsequently he filed a bogus complaint against dalits at the Bhawanpur Police Station.

Later, Valmiki Samaj members met Senior Superintendent of Police Meerut Rajesh Kumar Pandey, and declared that they would embrace Islam if they were denied entry to the temple.

The police chief assured them to take action against the priest.
