Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a Rs 500 crore immediate aid for Kerala that has been reeling under torrential rains and floods.

He chaired a review meeting in Kochi with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor P Sathasivam to take stock of the flood situation in Kerala. The meeting was also attended by higher officials.

The PM has begun an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas. Earlier in the day, the chopper carrying the PM could take off from the naval base in Kochi but had to be called back as heavy rain lashed the area.

Torrential rains, overflowing rivers and a series of landslides have resulted in the death of 150 people in three days, leaving over three lakh people in over 2, 000 relief camps.
