Dubai: Healthcare specialists across the UAE are witnessing a significant rise in the diagnosis of bronchitis and pneumonia among patients seeking medical attention. With more than half of the patients presenting symptoms of acute bronchitis and nearly one in ten diagnosed with pneumonia, concerns about respiratory health are mounting.

Specialists like Dr. Raiza Hameed KH from Aster Clinic in Bur Dubai are reporting a surge in cases of acute bronchitis and pneumonia in their outpatient departments (OPDs). Similarly, doctors at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi have recorded a notable increase in patients with these respiratory conditions.

Healthcare experts attribute this escalation to various factors, including sudden weather fluctuations and the dusty, hot environment prevalent in the region. These conditions contribute to respiratory infections and exacerbate existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The unpredictable weather patterns, characteristic of the region, play a significant role in the rise of respiratory infections like acute bronchitis. Along with this, environmental factors worsen the condition of patients with asthma and COPD, leading to exacerbations.

Factors such as increased travel for Umrah, spring vacations and huge gatherings during Ramadan are also believed to contribute to the surge in respiratory infections. Additionally, healthcare authorities have highlighted the importance of influenza vaccination in mitigating the spread of respiratory illnesses.

The increasing number of bronchitis and pneumonia cases across UAE hospitals underscores the importance of prioritizing respiratory health. Healthcare providers advise individuals to take necessary precautions, including vaccination and avoiding exposure to environmental triggers, to mitigate the risk of respiratory infections.
