Sheikh Mohammed honors professor for advancing financial econometrics

Algerian economist and Princeton University professor Yacine Ait-Sahalia has been awarded the prestigious Great Arab Minds Award in Economics. The accolade, announced on Monday, recognizes his contributions to financial econometrics.

A statement announcing his win highlighted Professor Ait-Sahalia’s transformative impact on understanding high-frequency financial data and continuous-time processes.

"His innovative econometric methods have provided essential tools for estimating market volatility, forecasting trends, and evaluating economic risks. By addressing challenges like microstructure noise and capturing dynamic market behaviour, his research has greatly enhanced asset pricing and financial decision-making", it said.

With over 80 academic studies and two books to his name, Professor Ait-Sahalia has cemented his position as a pioneer in the field, leaving a lasting legacy in financial analysis and economic planning.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, praised Ait-Sahalia’s contributions, emphasizing their profound impact on financial markets and economic strategies.

"He has made exceptional contributions by developing an advanced financial-economic metric to measure levels of volatility and understand patterns of future rises and declines", said Sheikh Mohammed.

"His work has significantly enhanced the analysis of financial markets, the assessment of economic risks, and the efficiency of financial and economic planning", he added.

Sheikh Mohammed also expressed enthusiasm for celebrating the winners of the Great Arab Minds awards at an upcoming special ceremony.

The recognition of Professor Ait-Sahalia underscores the importance of groundbreaking research in economics and its role in shaping the future of global financial systems.
