Emirates introduces stricter power bank rules onboard from October 1

Emirates will introduce new regulations on carrying and using power banks onboard its flights, effective October 1, 2025. The airline said passengers may carry only one power bank, with specific conditions, but it cannot be used during the flight.

Under the updated rules, the power bank must have a capacity of less than 100 Watt Hours and display capacity rating information. It cannot be used to charge any personal device while onboard, nor be charged using the aircraft’s power supply.

The airline also specified that power banks must not be placed in overhead stowage bins. They should be stored in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front. Power banks remain prohibited in checked luggage, as per existing rules.

Emirates said the changes follow a comprehensive safety review prompted by an increase in lithium battery-related incidents across the aviation industry. The airline noted that the growing number of passengers using power banks in recent years has heightened the potential risks.

Most power banks use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which can experience “thermal runaway”, a rapid and uncontrollable rise in temperature, if damaged or overcharged. This can lead to fire, explosions or the release of toxic gases.

While many modern devices include safeguards to prevent overcharging, some basic power banks lack these protections. Emirates said prohibiting their use in the cabin will significantly reduce risks and storing them within easy reach will allow trained crew to act quickly in case of a fire.
