Dubai RTA uses AI to predict demand for marine transport services
text_fieldsDubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded its Seasonal Network initiative for marine transport by introducing artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to better manage passenger demand across the emirate.
The system is designed to improve operational flexibility and respond more efficiently to demand changes during holidays, major events and seasonal peaks.
RTA said the initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen integration between marine transport and other public transport systems while supporting Dubai’s growing population and tourism activity.
The summer operating plan is scheduled to begin in July and will rely on a centralised big-data platform containing information on passenger numbers, occupancy rates and revenues.
According to RTA, the data-driven model will improve forecast accuracy and support faster operational decisions.
Khalaf Belghuzooz Al Zarooni, Director of Marine Transport at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said the network was developed using in-house algorithms and AI-based analytical tools capable of processing large volumes of data from multiple sources.
He said the technology allows operators to forecast demand patterns and apply flexible seasonal operating models that balance customer needs with operational efficiency.
Al Zarooni added that customer feedback is also integrated into the planning process through approved communication channels to ensure services reflect passenger requirements alongside technical analysis.
The authority said predictive analytics are being used to study marine transport usage patterns and measure the impact of different factors on schedules, service intervals and passenger flow.
RTA added that the flexible operating model can simulate customer behaviour and forecast demand in line with international standards, supporting service quality and long-term sustainability.
The Seasonal Network initiative is implemented separately for each season to ensure services remain aligned with changing travel patterns while supporting Dubai’s wider smart transport strategy.
