DCT Abu Dhabi launches cultural trail across Al Ain’s historic oases
text_fieldsThe Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, has launched the Cultural Trail in Al Ain, a new discovery route through the historic Al Jimi and Al Qattara Oases. The initiative is designed to deepen public understanding of Al Ain’s heritage and position the city as a major cultural destination. The trail operates until 31 December 2025 and offers cultural experiences along a 1.4-kilometre route, with multiple stops where visitors can explore historic houses, mosques and programs showcasing living traditions.
The trail runs alongside Manar Abu Dhabi and remains accessible during the light art exhibition. Its design links the exhibition’s light-based installations with the wider landscape of the oases, integrating the site into the broader public art map across the emirate.
As part of the activation, the Al-Qattara section spans 1.4 kilometres and connects seven historic buildings, including Al-Bahaita Al-Darmaki Mosque. The Al-Jimi Oasis section covers one kilometre and links five historic structures, including the House of Abdullah bin Ahmed Al-Dhaheri. Both paths are connected to form a continuous route. Within the UNESCO World Heritage setting, the trail highlights stories of community life, creativity and regional heritage.
The launch supports Al Ain’s designation as the Gulf Tourism Capital for 2025, a decision by GCC tourism ministers, and reflects Abu Dhabi’s wider role in regional tourism and cultural cooperation. Programming across the oases includes markets, restaurants featuring popular dishes, a date and honey market, live date-pressing demonstrations, storytelling sessions led by Emirati guides, an exploration centre, an exhibition on Intangible Cultural Heritage from the UAE and GCC, a library corner with regional publications and traditional Gulf performances featuring instruments such as the oud and drums.
Entry to the Cultural Trail in Al Ain is free, with access from 08:00 to 00:00.
