Trump warns Iran of fresh military action as Switzerland talks begin

US President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Iran that it could face another military strike if it fails to restrain Hezbollah activities in Lebanon, even as American and Iranian officials began peace talks in Switzerland.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran must stop its "proxies" in Lebanon from causing instability and warned of further military action if it failed to do so. "Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don't, we'll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder," Trump wrote.

The warning came as US and Iranian delegations met at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland for talks aimed at building on an agreement signed last week to end hostilities between the two countries.

US Vice President JD Vance described the negotiations as a historic opportunity to reshape relations between Washington and Tehran.

"This is a historic meeting," Vance said. "The question before us now is how much more can we accomplish together? Can we turn over a new leaf? Can we change relations in the Middle East permanently? Or do we go back to doing things the old way?"

The talks follow an initial agreement reached last week that ended months of conflict between the United States and Iran.

The US delegation is being led by Vance and includes special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Iran's team is headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Pakistan and Qatar are serving as mediators in the discussions.

The negotiations are expected to focus on implementing the recent agreement and addressing broader issues, including regional security, Iran's nuclear programme, and economic matters.
