Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain “completely open” to commercial shipping during the ongoing ceasefire period, offering temporary relief to global trade and energy markets.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on X that all commercial vessels can pass through the key waterway along designated routes coordinated by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation.

The announcement was echoed by US President Donald Trump, who said the strait was “fully open” and ready for passage. However, he added that the US naval blockade on Iranian ports would continue until a broader agreement with Tehran is finalised.

The development had an immediate impact on markets, with crude oil prices dropping by around 10 percent following the reopening, according to reports.

The move comes alongside a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, announced by Trump after calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The truce is part of wider efforts to de-escalate tensions linked to the Iran conflict, with Tehran reportedly insisting on a Lebanon ceasefire as part of any broader arrangement.

Trump said the ceasefire would begin at 5 p.m. EST and added that he expects both leaders to visit the White House in the coming days.

European leaders welcomed the reopening of the strait but stressed the need for a lasting solution. French President Emmanuel Macron said there must be a full and unconditional reopening, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the arrangement should become durable and workable.

Both countries are planning a multinational maritime security initiative, with military planners set to meet in London to discuss safeguarding shipping routes in the region.
