Riyadh: The Saudia Group has signed a deal to purchase 100 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jets from German company Lilium. The agreement includes 50 confirmed aircraft and 50 optional aircraft, marking Saudia Group as the first aviation company in the Middle East and North Africa to make such a purchase.

The deal follows a memorandum of understanding signed during the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh in October 2022. Saudia Group is expected to receive its first eVTOL aircraft in the fourth quarter of 2026, coinciding with the launch of eVTOL flights by the Saudi Private Aviation Company.

The fully electric eVTOL jets can take off and land vertically, eliminating the need for traditional airports. They can travel up to 175 kilometers at speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, accommodating six passengers and significantly reducing travel time.

The acquisition aims to connect multiple destinations and support air routes among Saudia Group’s main operating airports. It is expected to reduce travel time by up to 90%, especially to tourist destinations and congested areas, while enhancing the range of premium services for VIP guests.

This agreement aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, supporting tourism, entertainment and sports sectors. It also aims to facilitate the transport of 330 million passengers and 150 million visits, including 30 million Umrah performers during Hajj and Umrah seasons.
