Saudi hosts first Regional Arab Youth Forum on man, biosphere in Jazan
text_fieldsSaudi Arabia is hosting the first-ever Regional Arab Youth Forum on Man and the Biosphere, bringing together experts, decision-makers, and youth from across the Arab world to tackle pressing environmental challenges. The forum, which began on Tuesday in Jazan, runs until December 19, under the auspices of the National Center for Wildlife in collaboration with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science.
The event marks a significant milestone in addressing biodiversity challenges, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening climate resilience. It features contributions from wildlife specialists, biosphere experts, and officials from UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program, which Saudi Arabia has actively supported.
Participants will visit the Farasan Island Marine Sanctuary, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve since 2021. Located 50 kilometers off Jazan's coast, the sanctuary is home to endangered marine species, vibrant coral reefs, and over 230 fish species, showcasing the region's ecological richness.
Mohammad Ali Qurban, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife, emphasized the forum's alignment with Vision 2030's environmental goals. He highlighted Saudi Arabia's commitment to protecting ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and fostering collaboration across the Arab region. Qurban also underscored the importance of empowering Arab youth through training and cooperation to address environmental challenges and preserve biodiversity for future generations.
The forum features workshops and sessions on topics such as biosphere governance in Saudi Arabia, youth partnerships in biodiversity protection, and strategies for regional collaboration. It also facilitates knowledge-sharing among Arab youth networks in areas like governance, financing, and strategy development.
The initiative supports UNESCO’s broader MAB goals, strengthening the relationship between communities and their natural environments, while reinforcing Saudi Arabia's leadership in biodiversity preservation and environmental governance in the Arab world.
