Jeddah University develops AI device to detect premature births

The University of Jeddah has developed an AI-powered device combining artificial intelligence with internet technologies to detect preterm births. The device measures the percentage of amniotic fluid in the fetal sac and identifies potential issues early, enabling timely medical interventions to support fetal lung development and placental health.
Created by Dr. Qamar Nayteh and Dr. Youssef Al-Sohafi from the university’s College of Computer Science and Engineering, the device recently won a gold medal and an international award at Romania’s International Exhibition of Inventions, Innovations and Technology.
“This demonstrates the efficiency of Saudi innovations and their ability to compete globally,” the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The device uses advanced ultrasonic sensors and AI for high accuracy, avoiding false alarms and enabling remote monitoring. Health professionals can follow a patient’s condition via mobile phone applications, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits. The device also features a user-friendly interface for pregnant women to monitor amniotic fluid levels at home.
