Qatar PM calls Strait of Hormuz crisis ‘global problem’

Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani has described the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as increasingly “difficult” and “challenging”, urging the international community to act against what he termed the manipulation of the strategic waterway, The Peninsula reported.
Speaking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in New York on Friday, September 25, 2026, Sheikh Mohammed stressed that the Strait has traditionally functioned as an international waterway and argued that its use as a tool in the ongoing conflict had turned the issue into one affecting the wider world.
He called for collective international efforts to prevent the waterway from being used as leverage, saying Qatar’s priority was to protect its population and safeguard the interests of future generations.
Regarding the possibility of an agreement between Iran and the United States, the Qatari premier said the two sides had engaged in indirect negotiations and noted that those discussions had produced encouraging developments. He expressed hope that diplomatic efforts could ultimately produce a resolution.
Sheikh Mohammed also addressed Qatar’s defence relationship with Washington, reaffirming its importance despite the attacks experienced by Gulf countries. He said the exceptional circumstances had prompted discussions on strengthening the partnership and ensuring that the longstanding defence relationship becomes more robust.
His comments come as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to rise, amid broader concerns about regional security and the future of one of the world’s most strategically significant waterways.
